Talbina is considered Sunnah, meaning it is a practice established or recommended by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) encouraged the consumption of talbina for its potential health benefits and as a remedy for certain ailments. This recommendation is recorded in various Hadiths (sayings or traditions of the Prophet) found in Islamic literature.
The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: “The talbina soothes the heart of the patient and relieves him from some of his sadness.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Talbina is often recommended for its soothing and nourishing properties, particularly in relation to digestive health and general well-being. It is made from barley, which is a nutritious grain known for its health benefits. Additionally, talbina can be easily digested and is believed to provide comfort to both the body and the heart.
Based on the teachings of Islam and the example set by the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), many Muslims consider talbina to be a Sunnah food and incorporate it into their diets, especially during times of illness or as a general health tonic.
Talbina Porridge
Recipe type: Breakfast
Author: @khadijakadodia
Prep time: 2 min
Cook time: 15 mins
Total time: 17 mins
Serves: 1
Ingredients:
- 1-2 tablespoons of 100% wholegrain barley flour (you can grind barley to make this)
- 1-2 cups water (or milk, or a combination of both)
- Honey to taste
- Pinch of ground cardamom
Instructions:
- Prepare Barley Flour: If you haven’t already, grind barley to make 100% wholegrain barley flour. Ensure that the flour is finely ground for a smooth porridge consistency.
- Combine Ingredients: In a saucepan, pour 1-2 cups of water or milk (or a mixture of both) depending on your desired thickness and creaminess of the porridge. Add the ground barley flour to the liquid.
- Mix Thoroughly: Stir the mixture continuously with a spoon to ensure that the barley flour is evenly incorporated into the liquid. This prevents any clumps from forming and ensures a smooth texture.
- Add Cardamom: Once the mixture begins to heat up, add a pinch of ground cardamom for flavor. Cardamom adds a subtle and aromatic touch to the porridge, enhancing its taste.
- Cook on Low Heat: Keep the heat on low and continue stirring the porridge mixture. Allow it to cook gently for 10-15 minutes, or until the porridge reaches a boil. Stirring continuously prevents the porridge from sticking to the bottom of the saucepan and ensures even cooking.
- Adjust Consistency: If the porridge becomes too thick during cooking, you can add more water or milk to reach your desired consistency. Similarly, if it’s too thin, you can let it cook for a little longer to thicken slightly.
- Sweeten with Honey: Once the porridge is cooked and reaches your desired consistency, remove it from the heat. Add honey to taste, adjusting the sweetness according to your preference. Stir well to incorporate the honey evenly throughout the porridge.
- Serve Warm: Ladle the warm barley porridge into bowls and serve immediately. Garnish with additional honey or a sprinkle of ground cardamom if desired. Enjoy this wholesome and nourishing breakfast option to kickstart your day with energy and vitality!
Additional Notes: Talbina can be customized according to your taste preferences. Feel free to adjust the sweetness, flavorings, and consistency to suit your liking. Experiment with different toppings such as chopped nuts, dried fruits, or seeds for added texture and nutrition.
